Productivity Improvement Activities by Period

  • 1950

    KPC was established in 1957. In the early days of KPC, in line with the policy of expanding production capacity in the import substituting industry, which was proceeded by the government in order to revive the economy, KPC established a long-term plan to promote the productivity improvement movement and expanded it on a yearly basis. In the following year of its foundation, KPC became the first in Korea to conduct management consulting business, which let us play a pioneering role in Korea, a barren of modern management at that time.

  • 1960

    The productivity improvement movement of the 1960s was focused on extensively carrying out industrial training, corporate diagnosis, and managerial and technical guidance so that each company could utilize new managerial techniques. In 1961, with the establishment of the Asian Productivity Organization (APO), KPC joined the founding member countries and have actively conducted various international exchange activities.

  • 1970

    The 1970s was an active period of economic growth driven by exports.
    The importance of productivityoriented management, which pursues economies of scale by implementing policies to foster heavy chemical industry and expanding facilities, has been emphasized. In this period, KPC prepared for the era of globalization. In line with the manpower management system where competence was more evaluated rather than seniority, KPC implemented a productivity improvement movement which was focused on enhancing pre-planned management and developing and utilizing employees abilities.

  • 1980

    The 1980s was important as a turning point in the productivity improvement movement. To build a sustainable growth foundation and to secure international competitiveness in a difficult economic environment caused by the second oil shock, both the people and the government recognized that it is important to improve the productivity of individual companies.
    In 1986, KPC was relaunched as a special corporate body based on the <Industrial Development Law>, which clarified the role of government to improve productivity, established the functions of productivityrelated organizations, and strengthened cooperation systems.

  • 1990

    In the 1990s, the Korean economy entered a full-fledged expansion phase, and its expansion was accelerated until mid-1990. At the end of 1997, however, the foreign exchange crisis had such a great impact on domestic demand including consumption and investment that it shrank rapidly. After the foreign exchange crisis, the movement focused on diagnostic guidance and education programs to raise productivity and competitiveness through rationalization, standardization and quality improvement of factories so that Korea could overcome the crisis of national economy and business management.

  • 2000

    With the rapid shift to the knowledgebased economy triggered by the development of high technology, the direction of the productivity improvement movement was changed as well. To lead the 21st century where both possibilities and uncertainties coexist, KPC started a nationwide productivity improvement movement and developed and disseminated new management innovation techniques so as to strengthen industrial development and the competitiveness of small and medium enterprises.

  • 2010

    KPC observed productivity improvement issues required by the times such as smart work, mobile productivity, energy productivity, and sustainable management, and has been leading the related businesses.
    In order to improve productivity throughout the enterprise value chain, KPC has been working to open up a new future for Korea through productivity improvement by promoting network-centered 쁊orean Productivity 3.0 since 2013. Recently KPC is preparing for the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution.

New Productivity Paradigm

The changes in the future society brought about by the Fourth Industrial Revolution are revealing themselves gradually in everyday life as well. The Fourth Industrial Revolution is also expected to significantly change our society, given that the last three industrial revolutions, summarized in the mechanical revolution, the energy revolution, and the digital revolution, had a profound effect on everyday life, changing technological, industrial and economic structures around the world.
Based on the experiences in improving the productivity in the Korean economy over the last 60 years, KPC has been organizing various businesses with a new productivity paradigm to enable Korean companies and workers to prepare for and respond to the 4th Industrial Revolution proactively, and to lead a new era further.
